TOOLS FOR SUCCESS IN 2010
Happy New Year! It’s a new decade and it’s time for a new you! Resolutions are running wild and its time to put them into action. How to do this?
Let’s start with three easy steps:
- Preparation Plan to be successful. Sit down and come up with a plan to achieve your goals, actually write them down. A little homework can go a long way. Just as people prepare for a meeting or and interview to be successful you can take the same approach. Take 10 minutes at night and make your lunch and snacks for the next day, or on a Sunday night make your meals for the next 2-3 days. Don’t get too complicated. Keep snacks that can be stored in your desk, car or bag. Make it easy, buy the packaged 100 calorie snacks keep it simple.
- Dedication Stick to it!!! In just a short couple of weeks you can and will see a difference. Anything worthwhile takes a little effort, but it doesn’t have to painful. In 2 or 3 months people can change completely what they took years to put on.
- Realization - Be reasonable. The old adage, “A thousand mile journey begins with the first step” is very true. Make easy small goals and achieve them. 3 small goals equal 1 very large one. Gradual changes will help ensure you stick to the plan. Don’t beat yourself up if you “fall off the wagon” just jump back on. No one has ever ruined their diet after only 1 meal.
These three steps are also invaluable when it comes to exercise. As long as you’re normally healthy, most people can start a reasonable exercise program. If you’re over 40 forget what you did in high school or college. You’re a different person from back then and that’s okay. If you need to talk to talk to your Doctor, “do it”. Start where it feels comfortable. Be progressive but don’t be over aggressive. Give yourself 1/2 hr 2 to 3 times a week. DVR “Two and a half men” if you have to, Charlie and Allen aren’t going anywhere. Every week add a little more. In a month you’ve jumped up a considerable amount. A gradual approach wins every time and keeps you in the game longer. Next time I’ll lay out a step by step approach to starting a winning exercise program. Get you back in the game with an easy no can lose plan.
